The question I am most asked is “Does Acupuncture work?”. It would not be thriving as it is today if it didn’t have subtle and lasting benefits. Acupuncture is a system of healing which has been practised in China and Eastern countries for thousands of years. Although often described as a means of pain relief, it is, in fact, used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. Its focus is on improving the overall well being of the person as well as specific symptoms.
According to traditional Chinese philosophy, our health is dependent on the body’s motivating energy – known as Qi – moving in a smooth and balanced way through a series of channels beneath the skin. Qi consists of equal and opposite qualities – Yin and Yang – and when these go out of balance, illness may result. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy (which run all over the body), an acupuncturist can stimulate the body to help heal itself and restore it’s natural balance.
The flow of Qi is vital to the joy of life and can be disturbed by a number of factors - infections, joint problems, poisons or trauma of any type. Acupuncture helps with disrupted emotional states such as depression, frustration, anxiety, stress, worry, phobias, insomnia and other such psychological conditions (which, in the end, manifest in the body).
The principle aim of Acupuncture, in treating all aspects of the person, is to recover the equilibrium between the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of the individual. Acupuncture is a vibrant system of medicine that treats the root of the problem as well as the symptoms, so that the complaint does not return.
This is done by taking a detailed history in your first appointment (the Traditional Diagnosis) including taking your pulse and looking at your tongue. There are no restrictions in age or condition as to who may receive treatment. Most people come because they “don’t feel quite right” or “the doctor says there’s nothing wrong” or a specific complaint/illness. People usually start to experience a change after four or five treatments although this can be less or more. Often people find that other aspects of their life have improved without their having thought of it before treatment – for instance, they sleep better, are less low in spirit or don’t crave a particular food any more etc. If you have been on Western drugs for sometime you may need more treatments but Acupuncture works easily with Western medicine. It is, of course, drug free and combines well with most forms of alternative healing including homoeopathy, osteopathy etc.
Moving the Qi in the body, by using very fine disposable sterilised needles at selective points, may be felt as an ache, as soreness, a tickle or just warmth. In addition to needles, I use moxibustion (a warming herb) and cups to move the painful Qi from certain areas. I use Phytobiophysics Vibrant Essences when appropriate.
I have been a member of the British Acupuncture Council since 1995 when I started in practice. I trained at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and I practise Traditional Chinese Medicine with Five Element Acupuncture. I work in Canterbury (CT1) and in Adisham (CT3).
I’ve been having regular Acupuncture from Philippa Nice for more than 10 years. I find it extremely
relaxing – it gets ‘right to the point’ every time - and it definitely works for me!
If I have a specific problem it is sometimes corrected straight away or improves gradually following
the appointment, but the treatment always makes a positive difference.
I never have any hesitation in recommending Philippa.
Although initially unsure as to whether I could cope with the ‘needle’ element of Acupuncture I
found Philippa Nice to have a professional quiet confidence that I felt I could put my trust in, so I
decided to give it a try.
I was pleasantly surprised that the most sensation I experienced when the needles went in was a
subtle feeling under the skin – certainly not the stabbing sensation I had envisaged!
Over the few years that Philippa has been treating me, some chronic health problems I have had for
much of my life, have definitely reduced and the increasing pain I was experiencing from an ankle
I fractured over 30 years ago is much improved. In addition the aching I would feel in damp and/or
cold weather is virtually a thing of the past.
After every treatment I am wonderfully relaxed and ‘in balance’ with a feeling of well-being.
Philippa has made a great contribution to my quality of life and I highly recommend her.
